Given the Circumstances

The rooster is handed the torch by the distant inevitability
of morning.
The Bible says nothing of these things, for this
story holds no moral.
But the Swiss watch that is nature clicks on, ignoring
the pretense of righteousness.
We act so haughty as we, like small pox, destroy
our unfortunate host.
Why then does the sky patronize with its continued
blueness?
Why then does the surge of life return to clutch
its shrinking ken every springtime?
