inlaws in Tivoli Sunday, March 27 2011
After stoking the fire for my cold-intolerant mother-in-law, I made vegan BLTs for her and my father-in-law. While the former pretty much wanted pretty much a traditional BLT (but with onions), the latter was adventurous enough to also want mushrooms and jalapeños (the way I made mine).
At some point everyone except me was solving crossword puzzles in front of the fire as I repotted seeds that had sprouted in the soil I'd cast them in. Some of these same seeds had been reluctant to sprout when I'd attempted to sprout them in a wet piece of toilet paper; clearly there are things in soil that encourage sprouting that are not present in damp tissue, even when the moisture comes from a dog water bowl that one of our cats likes to drown his kibble in.
Eventually I drove us all to up Tivoli in the Subaru so we could have lunch at Luna 61, where food is organic and delicious, but also expensive. As always when with the inlaws, we didn't leave town without first walking around in it. Luckily, a few stores were actually open, including an art co-op (where I took advantage of an interactive art table to draw the Egyptian rooster-headed god Cockadoodledoodleses). The bakery was also open, though nearly all their bread was gone and we were forced to buy loaves containing chocolate and cinnamon. Weather continued to be unseasonably cool and crisp, but it still felt nice when standing in the sun, which, at this time of year, has considerable power.
Gretchen's parents headed back to Albany at around 4:00pm to catch their airplane. I'd had the $16 Asian noodle pot for lunch at Luna 61, but if anything that only encouraged Gretchen to make a huge Asian noodle pot for tonight's dinner.
