walling in the east Thursday, June 14 2012
I've been gradually walling in the outside of the greenhouse upstairs with carefully prefabricated and pre-painted plywood panels. These panels have each been cut to completely seal in that part of the wall they cover, by, for example, reaching up between the rafters to the roof decking. The north wall and about half of the west wall have already been installed, and today I began on the east wall. Since my main entrance to the upstairs had been up a ladder and between the joists of the east wall, once today's panel was in place I was forced to enter the upstairs through the rough door opening in the west wall. The terrain is kind of a mess over there, covered as it is with dead White Pines removed this winter from the septic field. Eventually I'll have to either build steps or some sort of deck, since the door to the upstairs is a couple feet above grade (and the grade itself is an artificial hump).
I've neglected to mention an article that was published in the C-ville Weekly a couple weeks ago about the Big Fun Glossary. I'm not sure why the Big Fun Glossary had to wait so long before getting the C-ville's attention, and I don't really know that the Glossary is anywhere near as relevant to the Web or Charlottesville as it once was, but in any case it's not a bad article; indeed, it's much better than I had hoped. There are now a few comments posted beneath the article, some of which reflect bitter memories of those days. A number of Big Fun alumna think that most of those bitter comments were actually posted by Matthew Hart. The evidence for this can be found in the repeated mentions of Shira's death (which happened in Philadelphia and involved the sorts of drugs that were not available at Big Fun — for a number of reasons it impacted Matthew especially hard). While for me Big Fun initiated a positive transition to the person I have become, it's fair to say that Big Fun took Matthew down a rabbit hole and effectively delayed his self-actualization (if you can forgive my use of that ridiculous expression). So perhaps he has good reason to take a dim view of those years. But all indications are that he turned out okay despite all that.
