completely passive entertainment Monday, January 29 2018
This evening as I worked at my laboratory workstation, I could hear Gretchen watching Jeopardy! in the adjacent teevee room (with Neville and Ramona corralled in with her behind the wire mesh walls of that foldable pen we have up there). One of the clues was about about a key party gone wrong, and I knew the answer, The Ice Storm, which I'd never actually seen. So I immediately downloaded it using Bittorrent. Later this evening, after I'd climbed into the recuperation fort for the night, I watched the whole movie in its entirety. I was hoping it was a piece of cinematic brilliance that I would watch and kick myself for not having seen 20 years ago, but there was something disatisfying about it. It didn't develop the characters enough for me to understand the infidelity at the heart of the story, and Christina Ricci's oversexed 14 year old character came across as a purpose-built construction in lifetime library of fantasies dwelling in the head of an older man.
I was please with myself that I was able to watch a whole movie without being under the influence of any alcohol or drugs (not even caffeine). Normally I'd get bored about a third or half way through and want to check social media or be inspired to write a little code. I suspect that not drinking caffeine allows me to focus better on completely passive entertainment.
