   east winds in Hurley
Friday, May 4 2018 [REDACTED]
A thunderstorm blew through late this afternoon, and then, well after the rain had stopped, a period of powerful gale-force winds followed. Oddly, they seemed to mostly be coming from the east. East winds are common here, perhaps because of the effects of the Catskills to the west and our being at the edge of an escarpment above a low valley immediately to the east. But usually when the winds are strong, they're from the west (which is the way winds generally blow at this latitude).
Getting to sleep, even with a scampering eight-week-old kitten in the bedroom, was fairly easy with the help of 50 milligrams of diphenhydramine.
