Like my brownhouse:
sometimes the best saw is a chainsaw
Monday, May 7 2018
It was a beautiful sunny day, and the new deck that will be the floor of Gretchen's screened-in porch looked great in the full light of day. Late this afternoon, I carved out a little time to work on it. The floor joists were a ragged mix of lengths at their east (farthest-from-the-house) end, and I needed to make them straight. But the decking above them limited the sort of saw I could use, so I was forced to use my big battery-powered chainsaw, which allowed me to insert a blade at nearly a right angle to the joists, cutting them off along lines I'd drawn. The chainsaw left a somewhat ragged edge, but it didn't matter. Later I slathered the ends of the joists in tar and then, after dark, I installed a big 12 foot two by ten, butted against the ends of all those joists and attached at either end to the vertical colums that will one day hold up a roof.
