keep them from flopping up and down with every bump Thursday, May 17 2018
I took a break from my work day this afternoon to drive out to the Home Depot. I mostly went there because I wanted metal framing bits (similar to joist hangers) that would support the screened-in porch's eastern four by six corner posts as they were being twisted into a more orthogonal arrangement. In the foundation, you see, they'd been a little rotated our of an ideal arrangement, and I wanted them to be nice and square where they supported the rafter girder. But I also didn't want them to split under the stress of being twisted. So I wanted metal bits to clamp around the parts of the post outside the narrow notched section where the girder would attach (and also supply the leverage for the twisting). While I was at the Home Depot, I also bought four sixteen foot two by eight for use as rafters. I will need more than twice that many, but I don't want to carry all of them in one trip. Even sixteen footers travel fairly well on a Subaru roof rack so long as you tie down the ends to keep them from flopping up and down with every bump. With all that leverage, there's no telling what one those pieces would do if allowed to bounce around freely.

As always for a Thursday night, the workday ended with another multi-hour happy hour, during which I mostly drank various vodka-containing drinks and ate two sandwiches (but no pickles).
