more network game features in my version Spelling Bee
Thursday, June 20 2024
It was so hot this morning that Gretchen decided to run the new first floor minisplit in air conditioning mode, something we hadn't thought we'd ever do. But the thing about minisplits is that once they're in place, they can be air conditioners. And it's tempting to use them for this when all you have to do is push a button. It proved to be a powerful device, and with the doors all closed, temperatures in the house rapidly fell into the comfortable range. And they stayed there for awhile even after the split was turned off. I hadn't yet routed the condensate hose to a proper place, so for the time being I just had it running out through the garage door and draining on the ground.

I made further improvements on my version of the New York Times Spelling Bee, adding an "Others Playing This Game" table, which shows the ongoing state of play of anyone else playing the same day's Spelling Bee on my system. I then added a way to send messages to those other players. Later I figured out how to show the state of a player's game in the two sections of the hint page. There first of these shows how many of each word beginning with a specific letter and having a certain length you've found. The other shows how many of each word beginning with two letters you've found. One can then quickly compare this to the values for the full game to zero in on the traits of the missing words. Depending on how one plays, this could be considered cheating. But when I'm stumped, it's fun to cheat this way, as you're still forced to come up with the actual words without knowing all that much about what they are. The main annoyance in the hint page is having to count up how many of each category of word you already have. But now my code does all that tallying for you.

Late this afternoon, I took the dogs on a walk up the Farm Road as I often do. But since the bog at the bottom of the Chamomile Headwaters Trail is dry, I took them further south on the Farm Road to where the bogs nearly always have at least some standing water. There Charlotte and Neville could have a nice wallow to cool themselves off. (Charlotte doesn't really wallow like Neville does, but she will wade into the much.) Happily, nobody was bitten by a snapping turtle.
