bean stew Monday, August 26 2024
location: rural Hurley Township, Ulster County, NY
Gretchen took Neville to work with her today, leaving Charlotte with me. She was sad to have her brother leave, but she has things she does without him and she's gradually coming to accept that he's not always around. I took her on a walk this afternoon, which was a fun thing for her. But the mosquitoes were so horrible that I had to keep fanning the back of my neck to keep them away. I also cut the walk shorter than I otherwise would've.
[REDACTED]
Before Gretchen got home, I made a reduction out of a large number of tomatoes from our garden and used that as the base for a chili that contained black beans, green beans, kidney beans, chunks of sauteed tempeh and onions (but no mushrooms), and hominy. It was one of my best-tasting chilis ever. It was so good, in fact, that I was happy just eating it with rice instead of making it into tacos or burritos. It was also soupier than usual, since there was a large amount of water left in the tomato reduction. I actually referred to the chili as a "bean stew" when telling Gretchen about it.
