This morning Gretchen called a number of asbestos testing and remediation companies. After setting up an appointment with a guy named Roberto for later this morning, she talked to someone from an asbestos testing company. It turns out that asbestos abatement cannot be conducted by the same company that does asbestos testing, due to the inherent conflict of interest. The guy from the testing company didn't think, from the sound of things, that there would be much asbestos in the air at our Brewster Street house. Testing for it, which is what the tenant seems to want, would cost about 500 dollars, which didn't sound too bad if it gave us a good test result.
Gretchen and I went over to Brewster Street to meet Roberto as he walked around the basement and took pictures. There was more asbestos down there than I'd initially suspected, though I can't really understand what purpose it served that couldn't've been done just as well with sheet metal. Initially Gretchen was upstairs talking to the female half of the tenant couple, and she seemed really surprised and delighted that I'd replaced her kitchen faucet with something so nice.
After that was done, Gretchen headed off to some lunch date and I drove over to Lowes to return a ceiling light I hadn't ended up needing to install. While I was there, I wanted ot maybe buy another battery for deployment with a controller at the cabin, but they didn't have anything I liked. So I ended up making a rare trip to Walmart (which is where I got the 12v lawn mower battery that I used to power the original Disturbatron). Walmart seems to be concentrator for grotesquely overweight unhealthy people, some of whom are wearing masks because they have to work even though they have covid. So if I'm going into a Walmart these days, I like to get in in and get out without lingering too long near anyone. Initially I checked out the little lithium batteries that extend the life of a cellphone back in the electronics section. 10 amp-hours at 5v cost $20 or $30. Meanwhile over in the automotive section, a lawn mower battery, though much bigger, seemed (according to my research) to have more (maybe much more) than twice the capacity for a similar price. So I ended up getting one of those along with a Monster energy drink, one of the ritualistic indulgences I occasionally buy to signal to myself that I am having a good time, even though I don't particularly like them.
