two hours and several gallons Tuesday, February 18 2025
Temperatures didn't rise out of the low 20s todays, so the ice that was acting like a layer of volcanic glass covering everything remained intact. This evening when Gretchen needed to drive down to Woodbourne to teach her prison poetry class, I thought I'd go see if the Bolt could be driven out of the drivway. There was no way; all four of its tires were at the bottom of wells in the glassy ice that were a couple inches deep. So then I tried to extract the all-wheel-drive Subaru Forester and I couldn't get it out either. I'd encountered this problem once before with an all-wheel-drive Subaru in similar conditions. Fortunately, all I had to do was place four scraps of dimensional lumber behind each of the wheels, and this gave the Forester the traction it needed to get out. Gretchen then spent an hour driving to Woodbourne only to find it was in lockdown and there would be no classes today. So she turned around and drove back home. Two hours and several gallons of gas wasted!
Meanwhile today I implemented a fun new feature to my Networked Spelling Bee, which has four or five regular players. In the backend, I changed the initial game data lookup to call up data from any game in the past. If you've played that game, it picks up where you left off. And if not, you can play it from the start. I then implemented a frontend system for sending the date from a calendar interface, and it worked perfectly. It shows the progress of other players on historic games and even gives appropriate hints if you want to play that way.
