over 18 quintillion Sunday, March 16 2025
After lots of debugging and the tracking down of little errors (some of them pretty stupid), I finally got the new encryption scheme for my ESP8266 Remote system working correctly. Now it is possible to use the configuration to change how the storage password is encrypted, with provisions for over 18 quintillion different configurable methods, meaning it's impossible to know by observation of the HTTP requests what algorithm is being used. I could've used HTTPS instead, which would provide better security. But the overhead on the transactions would be more than a poor little ESP8266 can handle.
I'd occasionally take a break from my debugging to do further work on the various stone wall projects I've been working on between our house and the Chamomile Wall. The weather was cloudy but warm, with temperatures in the mid 60s. I was doing some work on the nascent new extension of the Chamomile Wall west of the Stick Trail this evening at around the time when Crazy Dave walks his dogs, and sure enough, Brigitte came running up to investigate me. Unlike the other dogs, she does so silently, so it didn't create a commotion, allowing me to slip quietly off up the Chamomile ravine to the Farm Road.
This evening Gretchen used leftover curry and udon noodles bulked up with the overly-salty stir fry I'd made last Wednesday to fashion a pretty good meal, which we ate while watching Jeopardy! and another episode of this not-very-good season of Severance.
