low-effort chili Monday, October 6 2025

This morning my alarm went off while I was in the middle of a dream. It had me in a theme bar designed to be especially janky and cheap-looking, with floors designed to flex uncomfortably as you walked across them and crappy chairs. Someone bought me a drink and it tasted like disinfectant. I asked the bartender if I could get a shot of rubbing alcohol and he said I could. I then regaled people with a made up story about being in Japan and driving around an old Japanese tank, periodically firing the cannon.
On the drive to work this morning, deer kept appearing in the road, either for the truck I was following to Lomontville or along Bogart Lane, where that mother and her now-nearly-grown twin fawns were in the road and only grudgingly stepped aside to let me and the guy behind me through.

Thoughts about these things clouded my mood for the rest of the day, subtracting somewhat from my initiative. When I got home, I took Charlotte (and Neville, at least for part of the walk) on a loop that started west of the Farm Road and then returned home via the Farm Road. That was a pretty low-effort walk. And then I made a low-effort chili mostly with just onions, mushrooms, two cans of black beans, some canned tomatoes, and whatever semi-rotten tomatoes I could find in the refrigerator and garden. That put a lot of water in the chili, which I then had to cook off. By doing that, the savory flavor was intensified, and it ended up being one of my best chilis ever.
Later I took a much-needed hot bath, the first in about a week.
