Soon he had become a waiter at the C&O, and had befriended Tyler, a bartender, and Matthew Hart, a dish washer. Matthew encouraged Rory to visit him at Kappa Mutha Fucka, and gradually Rory integrated himself into our scene.
But occasionally odd things would happen. One day Rory became so drunk that he made a complete ass of himself, attempting to suck on Diana the Redhead's toes, and then going on a joyride in Deya's car, burning out the clutch and destroying a tire. Rory paid for the necessary repairs, but we were left to wonder where this destructive energy was coming from and to what it was leading. Through it all, Matthew Hart defended Rory without qualification.
One weekend while Matthew was off fishing at the beach, Leah, Rory and a guy named Ocean went on a brief day trip to Blue Hole in the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains. They drank beers, swam in the river, and had, according to Ocean, an intense bonding experience. On the way back to Charlottesville, Rory sideswiped two cars in the other lane and then attempted to flee the scene. He, Ocean and Leah were all apprehended.
It turns out that Rory has a long history of automobile accidents and problems with alcohol. He's evidently an extremely bad driver; all his accidents except the most recent one occurred while he was completely sober.
At first, Rory had the sympathies of all his friends for his legal troubles. But over the following week, he did a series of things which conclusively proved to everyone that Rory cares very little about anything but his immediate satisfaction. Among these things was being found by Matthew Hart in bed with Leah, who had just dumped Matthew. This incident resulted in a massive abandonment by most of Rory's friends. If Rory would do such a thing to his best friend, what we he do to the rest of us?
He was out on bail, unemployed, homeless, isolated and shunned, so he started putting considerable time into his web page, which includes a very interesting online journal.
For a long time he was determined to remain in Charlottesville and to defend himself against the variety of felony charges resulting from the accident. Most people thought he'd be far wiser to flee back to England. He ended up heading out west instead.
