coward of the day: Army Ranger Bryan O'Neal

By victorvodka Posted in

Ordered by his superior officers to tell a heroic version of the tale of the death of former Arizona Cardinals safety Pat Tillman in Afghanistan, Army Ranger Bryan O'Neal appeared before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform today to tell the Democrats who now head it that this version was a fabrication and that he's ashamed for telling it.

Look, Mr. O'Neal, we're at war. And this is a war of information and ideas as well as bombs and bullets. The American people are a great and exceptional people in many respects, but they are not a warrior people, and they have a history of providing fickle support for essential engagements overseas. Even now their mood is turning so decisively against the war that it's unlikely they will elect a warrior president to continue George W. Bush's noble (if now unpopular) effort to clean up the Middle East.

Because of this, occasionally the version of history reported by the military has, by necessity, to be at variance with the actual facts of the case. This was true in World War II during our life and death struggle with the Nazis, and it's true now that we face a warrior people who hope to destroy us. Presenting Pat Tillman's death as a heroic struggle was part of the necessary informational strategy necessary to rally the homefront, and now Mr. O'Neal is undoing it all, not only destroying the inspirational value of that story, but tearing down Pat Tillman in the process. Bryan O'Neal is a disgrace and a coward. He clearly prefers a Taliban victory in Afghanistan to the democracy our strategists have planned for that country. He should be tried for treason, but now that the treasonous Democrats are in charge, hey, he's the belle of the ball!

I'd give our country a decade under these idiots before the Islamic horde overruns us completely. It's time to start figuring out in which direction Mecca lies!

Get rid of this douchebag. He's been doing this for a week. If he's a Republican I'm Elmer Fudd.

what - you're a coward too? by victorvodka

I'm just calling them as I see them. From the tenor of your post, I'm guessing you don't believe we're at war and that information plays an essential role therein. I hope you've figured out which direction Mecca lies, or your head will end up on a pike when Osama and the boys come knocking.

It is you by HoosierLife

Who is a coward if you believe that we as Americans are so weak we would crumble by finding out about the death a soldier due to friendly fire.

How dare you attacking his honor and service to this nation. If you are so worried about this nation sign up and go to Iraq or shut up. If there is one thing I can't stand is people insulting and name calling our troops. We are at war and we shouldn't be telling the world that it is ok for our leaders to lie to us.

The sad part is that you don't care about what happened today all you are thinking about is how it affects Bush's popularity.

O'Neal violated a direct order by victorvodka

Look, in the military, when you're told to do something you DO IT. That's the rule. O'Neal was told to tell an inspirational version of Tillman's death. Going and saying you were lying when you did that is a violation of direct orders. He actually should be court martialed. I believe in some countries he would be shot for this crime. This is a war we're fighting, folks, and though I know most of you only contribute by posting on websites and putting ribbon magnets on your cars, sometimes you have to help with the informational angle. Tillman's death could have rallied the homefront, but now it's been wasted. We're going to lose the war if we keep waging it with this sort of stupidity!

So if... by HoosierLife

First I believe you are now here for purely reactionary purposes now, but if a soldier is ordered to go into a town and kill all the women and children they should because it was an order...

Of course this would be a warcrime but tough I guess

There is nothing to be gained from engaging this jerk's faux arguments. He's simply trying to embody what he believes is an apt caricature of the right.

You had a good run, victorvodka. by Moe Lane

Alas, knowledge of the actual responsibilities of the American soldier when faced with an order that he considers to be either illegal or immoral can be safely assumed to be common among Republicans.

To be frank, we twigged with the Gonzales blog, but we wanted to see if anybody took that bait. I'm pleased to see that nope, nobody did.
