The surreal decorations of these abandoned cooling towers brighten what passes for a skyline in Soweto. The Apartheid regime saw fit to build polluting power plants in Soweto to provide electricity for Johannesburg, but the only power initially provided to the township was for regularly-spaced floodlamps illuminating the shantytowns at night.
