The neck of an ostrich is as flexible as an elephant's trunk and can put an ostrich's head anywhere (and pointing in any direction) within a wide sphere. It's as if it shares the same basic biological idea as the elephant's trunk, but with the decision to place the head (and its many sense organs) on the far end instead of stuck relatively immobile to the shoulders.
