overpriced middle eastern food in Rosendale
Thursday, September 8 2016
This evening near the end of work (an overlap made possible by the Slack app on my smartphone) Gretchen and I met our friends Jenny & Doug at a restaurant we'd yet to try in Rosendale. It's called Garden House and could best be described as Middle Eastern or Mediterranean. It has things like hummus, baba ghanoush, pizza, and dishes containing fish, figs, and goat cheese. The evening was hot and sticky like the jungles on Venus just before Venusian warming entered into a runaway feedback loop. Initially the plan was to eat outside, but then rain began to fall and it was decided to move inside (and thus not to have the dogs with us during the meal). I wasn't too excited by the vegan options on the menu, and settled on the red lentil soup and a plate of "Morocan curry," which should've probably, at $18, been something more than chick peas in red sauce with rice. It was good, but not as good as a $10 chana masala. Initial dinner conversation included a brief celebration of my job from The Organization, which I'd gotten since I last saw Jenny & Doug. Jenny & Doug work in the same philanthropic sphere as The Organization, though of course The Organization is bigger and much more famous than their little farm animal rescue operation.
We also talked about the new place Jenny and Doug are renting part-way up Shawangunk mountain to Mohonk from New Paltz. With a $70 annual membership at Mohonk, one can use any of its trails, many of which are seldom used. It's been great for walking the dogs, though even at the present rental it requires a short drive.
[REDACTED]
Poor Doug was suffering from a migrain and couldn't partake in alcoholic refreshments, so it was just Jenny and me drinking tonight. She had some sort of wine and I had the Two Hearted IPA, which tasted great but had the most poorly-designed label I've seen on a beer that isn't a house brand for Stewart's Shops.
