energized, in an existential sort of way Tuesday, July 6 1999
During a solo lunch break, I was outside the In and Out Hamburger joint near the center of Mission Valley, very near the busy 8 freeway and with a good view of the alien-looking south wall of Mission Valley. The south wall is extremely steep and covered with strange scrub and subtropical plants. The terrain looks very different from anything one could see in Virginia. Suddenly it occurred to me that I was an awfully long way from home. But I was neither lonely nor homesick; I was definitely energized, in an existential sort of way. I felt like I was on the road, by myself, exploring distant lands, just me and my rusty old bicycle, with no one to report to and absolutely no responsibilities. Indeed, if I had so chosen, I could have switched to that mode in an instant, abandoning my job and my relationship at a whim and relaunching my life into the vast, endlessly entertaining underworld.
But no, I returned to my job and put in yet more long afternoon hours. Then, in the evening, I reported dutifully to my relationship.
