   shipping the work-issued laptop
Tuesday, August 1 2023

location: rural Hurley Township, Ulster County, NY

[REDACTED]

I packed up my old work-issued laptop this morning in a too-small cardboard box with insufficient padding, since I didn't care what would become of it and the company that laid me off had only given me a shipping label. There's a FedEx dropoff box in the King's Mall (just north of the Home Depot), and that was where I said goodbye to it. At the time I was listening to an interesting story on NPR's TED Radio Hour about a 53.7-million-dollar fraud pulled off by comptroller in Dixon, Illinois, and I didn't want to miss any of it, so I wanted to drive right up to the drop-off box. But there was a blond woman walking on the sidewalk in that direction, and didn't want to freak her out by driving past her and stopping. So I did what might've actually been creepier, driving slowly behind her at the speed she was walking until I got to the dropoff box. At that point she turned around and I saw that she was far more beautiful than expected. By then, of course, it was obvious that my interest was in package shipping, not necessarily stalking random women in the most-ghetto of Kingston's strip malls.

I unapologetically took my fourth bath in five days this evening, since it's a great way to get away from the needy cats and the hot water feels good on my overextended ligaments. My left thumb is about 80% back to normal (a much faster recovery than I experienced from a sprained thumb in 1997), and my left shoulder is now in good enough shape that I no longer feel like an old man while getting off the bean bag or a couch.

The upper lid of my old work-issued laptop after nearly five years of use. It's been up to the Adirondacks many times, as well as Rochester, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, Portland, Staunton, Charlottesville, Gdasnsk, Helsinki, Stockholm, Germany, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, India, and spent two different months in Costa Rica.
