plenty of bobby socks Sunday, August 31 2008
This evening Gretchen made strictly vegan pizza and we watched a Netflix DVD entitled Across the Universe, a contemporary musical set in the 1960s and constructed around songs by the Beatles. The arrangements were all entirely new, though the songs were familiar and came from the entire career of the Beatles, an impressive range. The plot was simple; at its center it was a love story set in New York City between a lad from Liverpool and an American girl. But along the way we get plenty of bobby socks, Vietnam war action, peace protests, gritty stage performances, and psychedelic trips. While impressive, I found the film somewhat unsatisfying. Still, it was plenty watchable and the arrangements generally did justice to the original material. Gretchen felt the film had "a lot of integrity," and she took pleasure at the little details executed correctly, as in the scene where our Liverpudlian hero reflexively runs to the wrong side of a car when first hitchhiking in America. Several of the scenes indicated that the actors and directors had watched and re-watched Hedwig and the Angry Inch; there were many stylistic similarities, both large and small.
