   bad tussin
Tuesday, March 8 2016
Today wasn't all that different from yesterday in terms of how I spent it. It had taken a day or so, but now my body aches and weakness were being backed-up by an objective measurement: a fever than rose as high as 101 degrees Fahrenheit. Ibuprofen seemed to be the most effective medication for easing my discomfort and lowering my fever; the acetaminophen present in some dextromethorphan gel caps didn't seem to help at all. I also tried swigging some tussin DM from an old bottle, but it had a horrible petroleum/burnt-rubber aftertaste and I couldn't wash the foulness out of my mouth. I don't remember tussin tasting so terrible back when I was a tussinaut in the mid-to-late 1990s, so I have to assume this was a consequence of the chemical changes that occur over time; the expiration date for this particular tussin bottle had been back in 2008 (during the administration of George W. Bush).
I had another successful nap in the greenhouse, and later, back on the living room couch, I would periodically nap and awake to check the results from today's presidential primaries. Donald Trump was back in ascent, and Bernie Sanders had pulled off a surprise win in Michigan, perhaps keeping his presidential hopes alive (or at least as much so as Marco Rubio's).

Later, when I definitely wanted to sleep and not keep waking up with a tickle in my throat that inevitably resulted in a cascade of fruitless coughing, I took ten milligrams of ambien. Miraculously, this allowed me to sleep without waking all the way through to morning, something that wasn't even happening when this illness was entirely nascent.
