Gretchen didn't bring Neville to the bookstore today because of the cold weather. The store has trouble staying warm in such conditions, particularly near the front where people are always coming and going through a door to the street. And when Neville is there, he spends his time down near the floor, where it's even colder.

At some point I began working on another of my tiny paintings on a credit card, this time a closeup of a black snake with red markings. Unlike mammals (though a little like birds), reptiles are covered with a precisely-repeating pattern of scales, and unless these scales are depicted with the correct regularity, the illusion of what they represent dissolves completely. But if one includes just the right hints at the right regularity, the brain will fill in the rest and your reptile will come alive. All the scales with all their highlights made for quite a bit of precise painting, far more than I normally encounter when painting mammals. But I was happy with the results when they finally emerged:
