   polar vortex returns
Tuesday, January 21 2014
The weather took a harsh turn for the cold today as the "polar vortex" returned, with daytime temperatures never rising above 11 degrees. (Meanwhile I've heard from a Facebook friend in Germany that winter there has yet to arrive.) I had trouble getting the woodstove to heat living room temperatures above the low 60s (Fahrenheit, of course) until I closed the blinds on a large block of east-facing windows. After that, I managed to achieve temperatures in the mid-60s. The reachable layer in the woodpile right now is comprised mostly of large pieces of Black Locust, and though it burns for a long time, it doesn't burn as hot as oak. Oak, it seems, would be a preferable wood for household heating in such conditions.
